Growing Media Technician (Research Technician/ Specialist) - Agricultural Job Description

Kelly Scientific is currently seeking a qualified candidate for one of our top clients in Marysville, Ohio.

 
The Growing Media Technician will be responsible for field, greenhouse, and/or laboratory testing of new or experimental products that may include fertilizers, pesticides, and/or other gardening products. This position is an IMMEDIATE HIRE, TEMP-TO-HIRE opportunity, FIRST-SHIFT.

 
Job Duties:




  • Prepare trial areas for laboratory, greenhouse and field experiments

  • Prepares and tests developmental and commercial formulations

  • Records laboratory information from preparations and tests

  • Prepare and apply fertilizer treatments

  • Experimental design, set-up, and data collection

  • Greenhouse and field crop production and maintenance

  • Ships chemicals, manages waste and chemical inventory, and supports safety program

     



Key Work Performed:


Specific field biology related tasks required by a temporary employee:




  • Tech will be working with Biology on setting up trials, making treatment applications and data collection throughout the time period in the greenhouse and outside in the field.

  • Tech will assist specialist/technician with field trial and greenhouse preparations (tilling, re-filling rows with soil, mulching, planting, etc.)

  • Tech will assist specialist/technician with vegetable harvests, plant harvests, and cleaning up garden research areas in the fall once trials are complete

  • Daily Responsibilities would include:

    • Watering greenhouse and field trials

    • Weeding field trials

    • Assisting in data collection

    • Assisting in treatment applications

    • ARM data input and picture downloading and labeling

    • Trial/plot maintenance

       





Specific formulations related tasks required by a temporary employee:




  • Gather quantitative data on formulations such as pH, particle size, contact angle, viscosity, bulk density/specific gravity, etc. under scientist supervision

  • Assist Formulator with batching larger quantity formulations for scale up and stability testing.

  • Manage chemical inventory/SDS storage on a regular basis.

  • Comply with company environment health and safety policy.

     



Job Requirements:
Education/Experience:




  • Minimum high school diploma with experience in lawn and garden maintenance.

  • AS or BS degree in physical science, chemistry, material science, biology, botany, agronomy or horticulture and/or industry experience in a laboratory, greenhouse or field setting are desired.





Skills and Abilities:




  • Attention to detail, accuracy and basic math skills. 

  • Observational skills to identify visual differences in plant performance. 

  • Ability to follow work instructions and test protocols.

  • Personal drive and ability to be a self-starter and work unsupervised.  

  • Ability to lift 50lb required.

  • Basic computer skills including: use of spreadsheets, word processing and email
