Principal Investigator - Infectious Disease Research Job Description

Principal Investigator - Infectious Disease Research

SOUTHERN RESEARCH seeks to fill a position for an established research immunologist to join the faculty of the Department of Infectious Diseases in the Drug Discovery Division.  The position is equivalent in rank to an academic Associate or Full Professor depending on experience.  In contrast to traditional academic environments wherein the Principal Investigator's time is typically split between research, teaching and administrative responsibilities, Southern Research uniquely offers the opportunity for a Principal Investigator to exclusively focus on engaging in research and professional development activities.  The Division and Department are collaborative grant- and contract-based research enterprises engaged in the discovery and development of new treatments for infectious diseases as well as immunological diseases of non-infectious origin.  We are particularly interested in applicants with ongoing and vibrant extramurally-funded research programs focused on basic and applied investigations of immunology as it relates to host-pathogen interactions, bacterial and viral biology, and the development of immunotherapeutic and vaccine interventions for the treatment of immunological disorders of infectious and non-infectious origin.

The Division offers opportunities to collaborate with expert teams engaged in investigations focused on oncology, neuroscience, high throughput screening directed at drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, preclinical in vivo pharmacokinetic assessments, and clinical trials.  Routine opportunities exist for facile interactions with Drug Development Division scientists enabling translational in vivo evaluations using animal models ranging from mice to non-human primates, and investigations of medical devices and related bioengineering technologies.

Southern Research is adjacent to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) campus, the UAB Medical Center, and affiliated research centers, which afford opportunities for clinical collaborations, basic science research, as well as joint appointments with UAB.  To be considered, applicants must: 1) possess a PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree with a research emphasis in microbiology, immunology, biomedical sciences or related disciplines; 2) have an active externally funded research program; and 3) submit a curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page synopsis of prior research with external funding, and a two page description of future research goals.

Southern Research is a not-for-profit research organization that is academically affiliated with UAB.  The Drug Discovery Division successfully focuses on three therapeutic areas: infectious diseases, oncology, and CNS diseases.  The Division has a long-standing record of continuous funding through the National Institutes of Health and other federal and private organizations. As part of a large biomedical research community in Birmingham, we are committed to providing a stimulating and rewarding research and work environment.

Birmingham, Alabama has a high standard of living afforded by a moderate climate, beautiful wooded terrain, outstanding residential communities and schools, world-class healthcare, below-average cost of living, and a vibrant arts and entertainment scene.  In 2015, Birmingham is No. 1 on Forbes' list of America’s Most Affordable Cities.
