Environmental Scientist / Senior Scientist

The Environmental Scientist uses knowledge of the natural sciences, gained through formal education and/or direct experience in a related field, to contribute to project and programs that protect the environment.  The Scientist identifies problems and finds solutions that minimize hazards to the health of the environment and the population.

 

Major Accountabilities - Environmental Scientist:

  • Regularly conducts scientific studies to support the safe and efficient operation of business units or plants within the organization.
  • Participates in the operations of facilities for environmental compliance and identifies potential noncompliance issues.
  • Resolves various environmental problems by utilizing knowledge, process and procedures.
  • Conducts scientific investigations which may include sampling, analyzing test results, and interpreting trends to determine waste characterization. May also be called upon to participate in cause investigations and report findings to management.
  • Operates, maintains and monitors operating systems (e.g., water treatment and waste disposal) to ensure compliance with established guidelines. Provides technical support and maintenance of operating systems. 
  • Oversees the use of appropriate sampling and monitoring procedures and guidelines.
  • Will be responsible to ship various waste (hazardous waste, TSCA, and used oil) from field locations, apply proper shipping name, profile the waste with disposal companies. 
  • Reviews and evaluates proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on programs and facility modifications
  • Provides technical guidance to field personnel in interpreting and monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines. 
  • Provides Quality Control (QC) oversight of field sampling / data collection.
  • Develops schedule of inspections and samplings based on regulatory and permit requirements.
  • Assembles and verifies data for routine to complex metric reports.
  • Provides and participates in reviewing technical documents for internal and external audit groups. Participate in conducting environmental training to frontline employees
  • Keeps current on the changes developing in the regulations and legislation. 
  • Provides guidance to less experienced Specialists and technicians.  May act as lead person or technical advisor on small projects & participates in conducting environmental training to Frontline employees.
  • Evaluates and recommends field sampling equipment and supplies.

 

Major Accountabilities - Environmental Scientist – Senior:

  • Conducts or leads advanced scientific studies to support the safe and efficient operation of business units or plants within the organization.
  • Monitors the operations of facilities for environmental compliance and identifies potential non-compliance issues.
  • Regularly reviews and interprets the most complex analytical data to determine clean up levels on complex projects
  • Leads scientific and or cause investigations which includes identifying, analyzing, and interpreting trends and patterns generally using established precedents and standards, and develops and recommends solutions to management to remedy negative trends.
  • Operates, maintains and monitors operating systems, (e.g., water treatment and waste disposal) and or air quality systems to ensure compliance with established guidelines.  
  • Develops and oversees the use of appropriate sampling and monitoring procedures and guidelines. Prepares and revises technical documents for internal and external audit groups.  
  • Participate in the evaluation and review of proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on programs and facility modifications.  
  • May, on occasion, interfaces directly with regulatory agencies on questions of permit implementation and regulatory interpretation.
  • Interfaces with multiple internal departments to evaluate the impact of permits/regulations, and to coordinate comments on draft documents.
  • Works on ecological screening studies for potential sites.
  • Provides technical guidance in interpreting and monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines.  Reviews technical documents to ensure their accuracy and completeness.  
  • Keeps current on the changes developing in the regulations and legislation and provide input to business or organizations on impact of such regulations
  • Develops documents such as permit applications and regulatory submittals.
  • Provides leadership to less experienced Scientists and to Specialists. May act as lead person or technical expert on small to medium projects. Develop and deliver environmental training to all levels of the organization.
  • Works on ecological screening studies for potential sites.

Environmental Scientist / Senior Scientist Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements - Environmental Scientist:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Earth Science or related science (such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology) or other field from an accredited college or university, with specific coursework and/or internship experience which included conducting field studies, sampling and analysis, etc.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a related Environmental Science field or discipline.  
  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a combination of college coursework and directly related work experience equaling 6 years is required. 
  • Certification or licensure preferred. 

 

Minimum Requirements - Environmental Scientist – Senior:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Earth Science or related science (such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology) or other job-related field from an accredited college or university plus 4 years' directly related experience in environmental (with at least 2 years concentrated experience in Air, Water or Waste management systems);
  • OR Master's degree in Science related field plus 2 years' experience in Environmental related position. 
  • In lieu of Bachelors' degree, combination of college coursework and experience equaling 8 years. 
  • Certification or licensure preferred.
