Laboratory Technician Ii Job Description

Research Technician II
Kelly Scientific Resources is seeking a Research Technician II for one of its top clients in Boston.  The Research Technician will provide medium- to high-throughput sample processing services for various molecular biology and genomics applications. The position requires the ability to coordinate multiple concurrent projects and to coordinate the multi-day logistics of sample processing and data analysis. The successful candidate must be able to learn and work in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment, and to interact with all levels of staff and with researchers using our services.
Key Responsibilities:




  • Works independently as well as part of a project team on new and existing assignments

  • Carries out laboratory activities related to various Next-Generation Sequencing applications (Complete Plasmid Sequencing, CRISPR Sequencing, etc.) such as:

    • Receiving and entering customer samples into database

    • Organizing customer samples by order type and priority

    • Maintaining accurate sample records

    • Producing and QC testing Next-Gen Sequencing Libraries using automated workstations

    • Performing sequencing runs on Illumina MiSeq platform








  • Carries out laboratory activities related to the process of Sanger-based DNA Sequencing and Fragment DNA Analysis such as:

    • Receiving and entering customer samples into database

    • Organizing customer samples by order type and priority

    • Entering sequencing parameters into LIMS and maintains accurate sample records

    • Setting up DNA sequencing reactions

    • Performing automated purification of extension products

    • Processing customer samples submitted for automated PCR cleanup preceding DNA sequencing set-up

    • Loading sequencing samples on ABI 3730XL sequencers

    • Performing routine sequencer maintenance procedures and regularly scheduled diagnostic tests on sequencer



  • Carries out laboratory activities related to Mouse Genotyping such as:

    • Receiving and entering customer samples into database

    • Organizing customer samples by order type and priority

    • Maintaining accurate sample records

    • Performing automated genomic DNA extractions from Mouse tail biopsies, setting up genotyping PCR reactions, and

    • analyzing genotyping PCR reactions using Agarose gel electrophoresis



  • Executes other molecular biology methods and automated procedures as needed

  • Assists in troubleshooting of automated procedures using defined procedures and policies

  • Collects, compiles, analyzes and documents data

  • Operates various laboratory equipment such as:

    • Thermocyclers

    • ABI 3730XL Sequencers

    • Automated Work Stations (Tecan Freedom EVO 200 EVO, Biomek FX Systems, Biomek NXP Span-8)

    • Molecular Devices SpectraMax Plus 384

    • Thermo Scientific Nanodrop

    • Agilent 2200/4200 TapeStation

    • DNA Shearing Devices

    • Bio-Rad CFX384 qPCR System

    • Illumina MiSeq Desktop Sequencer



  • Assists in creating and implementing SOPs to maintain stringent performance requirements

  • Prepares reagents and test samples using SOPs and creates and maintains reagent and/or sample inventories

  • Maintains accurate written and electronic records of experiments performed

  • Assists in identifying and troubleshooting, in real time, relevant sequencing and molecular biology methodologies using defined procedures and policies

  • Participates on a Continuous Process Improvement team

  • Assists in the development, validation, and implementation of new core services and in the optimization of existing technologies

  • Attends and participates in regular all-staff meetings and in project meetings, summarizes results of experiments and assists in interpreting the results of studies

  • Interacts with core clients as needed

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned



 
Skills:
 




  • Demonstrated competence in molecular biology and laboratory research automation

  • Solid knowledge of the biochemistry of DNA extraction and PCR amplification, and ability to apply this knowledge to troubleshooting and optimizing of existing methods and procedures

  • Hands-on experience with standard molecular biology equipment and with  automated liquid handling workstations

  • Capacity to perform under pressure of a fast-paced production environment, with high degree of flexibility and ability to adjust to changes in work volume

  • Ability to conduct and tolerate highly repetitive tasks

  • Good general laboratory practices

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with great attention to detail and record keeping in both lab notebook and electronic documentation

  • High degree of computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Microsoft EXCEL, Microsoft PowerPoint, and the Windows operating system) and the ability to quickly learn additional computer-based applications to support specific core services and research projects

  • Must possess excellent communication and time management skills

  • Ability to work well in a dynamic group setting as well as independently



 
Education:
 




  • The candidate must have a B.S. in Life Sciences (Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry) with strong training in the theory and practice of molecular biology

  • A minimum of 1 year of directly related work experience.
