Research Technologist Job Description

Research Technologist
 
Kelly Scientific Resources is seeking an experienced Research Technologist for one of its top clients in Boston.  The Research Technologist will provide standard and custom medium- to high-throughput sample processing services for various molecular biology and genomics applications, including maintenance of automated laboratory workstations, and will participate in the development, implementation and execution of automated molecular biology procedures and processes.
Responsibilities:




  • Develops, validates, and applies high-throughput methods for various scientific applications using and programming laboratory automation.

  • Provides standard and custom medium- to high-throughput sample processing services for molecular biology and genomics applications (including but not limited to Custom Automation projects, Mouse Genotyping, 96-well Plasmid Preparation, High-Throughput Library Screening, and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Library Preparation).

  • Working with senior personnel, performs early research and development activity to create new core services that are robust, cost-effective and time efficient.

  • Collaborates with core customers (senior scientists and postdoctoral research fellows) to transfer new assays and methods to automation platforms.

  • Works closely with IT group and instrument vendors to develop and implement integration layers between automation platform and the LIMS systems.

  • Develops project timelines and utilizes time management practices and tools to manage demands and deadlines and to deliver on key project milestones; proactively communicates impending changes in work, project schedules and experimental design.

  • Accurately and consistently records experimental methods, materials and results in laboratory notebooks. Analyzes data, evaluates results, forms conclusions, and determines future experiments.

  • Uses broad knowledge of molecular biology techniques to proactively troubleshoot assays, to resolve technical issues and challenges, and to perform data interpretation. 

  • Presents findings or comprehensive project status reviews at internal meetings. Applies advanced technical writing and graphical skills to produce documents and reports.

  • Writes and implements standard operation procedures (SOPs).

  • Determines all chemicals, reagents and supplies needed for a project; develops a strong knowledge of all related third-party vendors and their technologies and products.

  • Maintains and troubleshoots liquid handling platforms, including cleanliness of work areas and instrument scheduling for various core and collaborator activities.

  • Assists Core Director in cost modeling and in the analysis of yearly volumes of automation services for the core budget process.

  • Flexibility in a fast-paced, changing environment; be willing to accept responsibilities outside of the initial job description.

  • Establishes and maintains productive relationship with all core personnel; develops internal and external collaborations.

  • For specific research services, works as a liaison between core laboratory and customers



Skills:




  • Strong molecular biology background and good hands-on knowledge of the latest molecular biology methods.

  • Experience operating and programming liquid-handling robotics.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent general laboratory and organizational skills including the ability to multitask and to work independently and well as part of a team.

  • Superior time management skills.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and orientation toward teamwork and collaboration.

  • Critical thinking, excellent data analysis and interpretation skills, good problem solving skills.



 
Education:




  • The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in the Life Sciences, with strong training in the theory and practice of molecular biology.

  • A minimum of three years of experience in a research environment (5 years preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
