Scientist Job Description

The Position
The incumbent is responsible for the screening, isolation and construction of highly effective enzyme-expressing strains.  The position of Scientist is responsible for management of all molecular biology-related projects and molecular biology team staff, and assumes responsibility for successful project execution and product development.

  • Lead the development of high expressing strains of enzymes, including both strain isolation and construction, to achieve the targeted expression level of biological activity.
  • Search for external opportunities to license technologies, or targets for alliance.
  • Focus and prioritize projects and assume responsibility for their success, with a strong sense of urgency and being aware of time to market.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and set timelines
  • Work closely with other R&D Scientists to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion
  • Maintain a detailed and organized lab notebook
  • Actively participate in identifying research areas that could lead to the development of new products
  • Write research proposals and solicit external funding
  • Write, review, and approve various professional documents, for both internal and external use

  • PhD. in microbiology, molecular biology, or comparable field
  • Extensive background and expertise in molecular biology and microbiology
  • Up to 5 years of industry experience in cutting edge technology development
  • Background research on enzymes is a plus
  • Experience supervising BS/BA, MS, and PhD level scientists
  • Proven track record of accomplishments; accomplishments in commercialization by taking products based on new technologies to market successfully is desired
  • Experience supervising scientists
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and motivated by accomplishment
  • Experience with regulatory affairs; understanding of Intellectual Property, protecting IP, and freedom to operate issues is desired
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to simultaneously manage several projects and lead teams of various talent and expertise
  • Excellent scientific skills in experiment design, data collection, and problem solving
  • Ability to present ideas effectively and communicate well with all levels of management within a team environment on a variety of programs and projects
  • Project management skills, including forecasting skills, project planning, and development of project timelines
  • Advanced computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) and statistical analysis
  • Ability to work in a changing environment

Working Conditions: The Scientist position is based at Kemin Industries Discovery Research headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. The exempt-level position is considered to be 40 hours per week, but requires tremendous flexibility and may require operations monitoring on off-shifts including weekend and holiday work.
